People have their say on Sevenoaks speed limits and traffic calming measures

People are being asked to share their views on proposals to bring in calming measures and reduce speed limits.

Kent County Council (KCC) plans to introduce the restrictions across various roads in Sevenoaks.

If approved, the scheme would see a 20mph zone implemented across much of the town, as well traffic calming on the A225 Dartford Road.

A proposal was submitted by KCC back in spring 2021 for plans to reduce the speed limit in A225 Dartford Road.

It was requested by council member Richard Streatfield and backed by 1,800 signatures on a resident-led petition.

Now KCC has pushed the scheme through to a consultation period asking for residents' opinions on the proposed changes.

The council is proposing to reduce the existing speed limit to 20mph on several major roads – including A225 St Johns Hill, London Road up to its junction with Mount Harry Road, as well as the B2019 Seal Hollow Road, A225 Tonbridge Road 50m south of Finnes Way, Brittons Lane and Dartford Road.

It is also proposed that a zebra crossing and traffic calming measures are introduced to Dartford Road and The Vine.

This would include a new southbound cycleway, one-way southbound route in Dartford Road, alterations to turning movements from The Vine onto Dartford Road, as well as a new footway build-out at The War Memorial site to improve pedestrian access.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Cllr David Brazier said: “We know that studies show one of the best ways to encourage more walking and cycling is to make sure people feel safer.

“By introducing a town-wide 20mph zone we can make it more attractive for people to ditch their car for local journeys, thereby making healthier, cheaper and more sustainable journeys while reducing traffic.

"In addition, slower speeds reduce the severity of injuries should an incident happen.

“We are keen to hear residents’ views on our proposals through our consultation, which has now opened, so we can learn and further develop the proposals.”

The consultation opened last Friday and closes on Thursday, November 10.
