Westerham High Street closed after fire in building used as offices

A busy road will remain shut until next week following a possible arson attack.

Firefighters were called to High Street, Westerham at 3am on Monday after a blaze broke out in a shed and spread to the roof of a neighbouring two-storey property.

A police spokesman confirmed the cause of the fire is currently under investigation and the incident is being treated as suspicious.

A total of 16 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were initially called to the scene.

Crews used a hose reel to put out the fire in the roof space of the building while further firefighters tackled flames from the outside.

At the blaze's height four fire engines were on scene. The main fire was fully extinguished 4.20am but crews remained and used a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots.

A positive pressure ventilation fan was then used to clear smoke from the property.

A structural engineer also arrived to assess the damage and the building's safety.

No one was injured during the fire.

The A25 has remained shut ever since. Kent County Council's Highways department has indicated it could remain closed until at least Tuesday.

Diversions are causing traffic chaos in the area and a number of students are having to make alternate arrangements to get to school.

HGV's and other large vehicles are being advised to follow the signed diversion route.

The eastbound diversion is via B269 High street, B269 Titsey Road, B269 Titsey Hill, B2024 Clarkes Lane and B2024 Croydon Road.

Those travelling westbound should travel via B2026 Hosey Hill, Hosey Common Road & B269 Kent Hatch Road.

A number of bus services have also been diverted away from the town.
