Traffic in Sandwich is at a stand-still after a lorry has become stuck near Strand Street

Traffic is now flowing normally after previous chaos in Sandwich when a lorry became stuck at Breezy Corner near Strand Street.

The articulated lorry, which exceeded the weight limit for the town, was stuck at the junction with Harnet Street for around an hour.

Up to eight buses were delayed from waiting behind the lorry.

Kent Police were called to the scene and managed to help the lorry out.

MJ Holloway, resident and councillor for Sandwich is at the scene. He said: "It's a calamity. It's disgraceful. What is it going to take to do something about this - for somebody to have been killed or for a lorry to go into the buildings."

This comes as Mr Holloway, who is on the Town Team, has been campaigning to stop so many HGVs entering the town.

For those wishing to travel on the number 13 and 13A via St Bart's Road and Sandwich Bypass are advised to make their way to St Bart's/ Sandwich Technology School where the service will resume.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Officers attended and carried out an assessment as to the best way to assist the driver in turning his vehicle around.

"I believe the situation has now been resolved and the lorry is being moved out."
