Villagers campaign for speed limit

Villagers are questioning highways experts who say their road does not warrant a speed reduction.

People in Wateringbury want to know why the busy A26 through their village is to remain with the national speed limit of 60mph, when better, adjacent roads are restricted to 50mph.

Cllr Sarah Hudson, chairman of Wateringbury Parish Council, said: “The dual carriageway Kings Hill Bypass is 50mph. Seven Mile Lane is 50mph.

“We want the A26 reduced to 50mph too between Mereworth Road and Canon Lane.”

Traffic consultants Jacobs has carried out a review of speed limits in the area for Kent County Council and is happy for the A26 to stay at 60mph. Cllr Hudson hopes to persuade Kent Highways differently.

She appealed to villagers to visit the village Post Office and sign a petition.

She said: “The more local support we receive, the greater are our chances of success.”
