Police reopen major stretch of road

THE A249 has been reopened in both directions between the M2 and M20 motorways.

Kent police took the decision to close the road earlier today due to the severe weather conditions.

There were no accidents reported overnight, but freezing temperatures and snow have continued to cause problems for motorists on Friday.

Earlier, a jack-knifed lorry led to one lane of the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the A249 being closed.

One lane of the A249 near Stockbury was also closed for a short time after a Mazda car collided with an embankment. Police are investigating the cause of that accident.

There are also reports of very icy conditions and black ice on the A20 between Lenham and Charing.

Meanwhile, the M20 remains partially closed due to the continuation of Operation Stack.

The coastbound carriageway is shut between junctions eight and nine and between 11 and 12 to help ease the backlog of cross-Channel freight.

Cars and light vehicles are being diverted off the motorway where it is closed, with lorries being allowed back onto the carriageway to queue.

The major roads in the county are passable with care, but police are warning motorists only to drive if absolutely necessary.

If journeys are essential, motorists are advised to drive with caution, allow extra time for their trips and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Police also advise drivers to make sure they have warm clothes and a torch with them when travelling.
