Medway evening bus services cut

Evening bus services are set to be cut to once every two hours, despite public calls for improvements.

Only one council-funded evening route, providing buses to Warren Wood, Princes Park and Lordswood, will be more frequent. That service will run every 90 minutes after the route is altered.

One service, the 191 to Hoo and Grain, will be scrapped in the evenings because the council cannot get Arriva to cut its £55,592 cost.

Thirty people use the service, which also provides an evening link with Medway Maritime Hospital. It will mean the last bus to Grain and Hoo will leave Chatham at 6.30pm.

Some early morning journeys on the same route are also to be axed, and the evening 176 service between Chatham and the Alexandra Hospital at Walderslade will also be reduced.

The reductions will be considered by the Cabinet tomorrow.

Despite cus, the council is still facing a forecast overspend of £43,381. There are likely to be further cuts.
