Eurostar cleaners to walk out over pay 'disgrace'

Workers who clean Eurostar trains have voted to strike on Bank Holiday Monday in a bid to improve pay and working conditions.

More than 120 cleaners who are members of the Rail Maritime and Transport union will strike for 24 hours from 6am on August 25.

The 120 are employed by Surrey-based contract cleaning firm OCS to clean trains for Eurostar, the operator of high-speed trains through Kent.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "No-one living in or around London can live on £6.37 an hour, but that is what OCS pays, and there is not a penny extra for overtime or bank holidays.

"That alone is a disgrace - but on top of that there is no pension, no sick pay and only the bare minimum legal holiday entitlement.

"It would be great if people using Eurostar's services over the bank holiday could let the company know that it has a moral duty to stop this."

A spokeswoman for Eurostar said: "As far as we are concerned there will be no impact on travellers or services."

No one was available to give a statement from OCS.
