More science jobs in the pipeline

KENT Science Park, Sittingbourne, is to be home to a so-called Bio-Accelerator that aims to fast-track scientific enterprise. The 20,000sq ft lab will be created by giving a major facelift to existing accommodation.

It is expected to bring jobs and businesses to the area by providing space for start-up companies trying to develop new technologies. When completed by mid 2006, the Bio-Accelerator, which will also offer smaller laboratory space, will provide accommodation for more than 40 businesses.

KSP is part of Sittingbourne Enterprise Hub and at the heart of the knowledge economy.

Working with the Bio-Hatchery in Canterbury Enterprise Hub, part of the University of Kent, the Bio-Accelerator will allow growing incubator businesses to take advantage of a single location for their growth and development.

Nick Sharp, site director, said: "The Bio-Accelerator will provide an important business incubation facility, particularly for companies in the bioscience sector which has seen considerable expansion in Kent over the last decade. "

Links with the Bio-Hatchery would provide another important link in the county’s bio-pipeline. Mr Sharp added: "This investment will strengthen Kent Science Park’s position as a centre of excellence in which hi-tech and knowledge companies can thrive and stimulate the already strong community of like-minded businesses."

The investment has been welcomed by Locate in Kent, the agency responsible for attracting businesses and jobs to the county.

Chief executive Paul Wookey said: "Kent has a burgeoning knowledge economy and for high-growth businesses to succeed and remain in the county the availability of high quality facilities and cost effective premises is vital.

"This major refurbishment offers huge potential for both UK and international scientific companies looking for the right location."
