Nice buying piece of history, but...

ONE of the most appealing aspects of home ownership is the abundance of properties of historic interest on the market, says the Federation of Master Builders.

But before you go ahead and invest in your own piece of national heritage, it’s worth considering all the issues.

Many old buildings cost more to upkeep and renovate than new properties and keeping a period home true to its origins requires research.

Organisations such as The Georgian Group and The Victorian Society offer a range of publications giving information about the history, design, materials and construction of each element of the house.

And a new website aims to help homeowners and professionals with a list of issues related to homes with historic interest. Its founder, Dorian Crone, is an architect and town planner, committed to providing information about our historic environment.

The FMB works with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Together they run training courses for builders specialising in conservation work.

SPAB also provides a free technical advice line, a website and a range of publications on the care and repair of old buildings.

The FMB provides a focus for standards and craftsmanship within the building industry. Any contractor who uses their logo will have had their business and trading history checked.

Many members can also offer a 10-year insurance-backed warranty called MasterBond.
