Bringing the office home

MORE than two million people in the UK now work from home. With the number set to increase, the demand for adaptable home office furniture grows.

Most new home developers recognise the need to accommodate this shift in working patterns, aiming to include studies or studios within their designs. Coupled with the use of home PCs the need for attractive, adaptable home office equipment is huge.

Unfortunately, not all of us have the benefit of a home which has a separate office area. It is for those that efficient use of space is of most importance. Working areas need to be accommodated within current living areas. Whether it is a bedroom or lounge, the last thing anyone wants is to be reminded of work as they set out to relax for the evening.

It is important to keep the working area compact and tidy. Bureau style desks are a good option. Available in most styles, these hide away all computers and papers leaving a co-ordinating piece of furniture on view.

For those who work from home on a regular basis a more favourable option is to convert a spare bedroom into a permanent work area. With careful planning the smallest box room can be a successful working space.

Select desks which incorporate a cable management system to keep leads neatly tucked away. Most importantly, choose a desk capable of supplying you with the space you require to work efficiently.

Make every effort to design your home office to meet all your requirements, ensuring that you invest in furniture suitable for the job. A wide variety of designs are available in an assortment of finishes. From glass and chrome to traditional reproduction, office furniture is available to complement any design.

Colours are an important influence on us all and need to be considered when decorating a home office. Calming tones of soft aqua, lilac and turquoise will create a relaxed atmosphere. Strong colours, particularly red, are stimulating but can be slightly aggressive.

Aim to create both a practical and attractive scheme to inspire you to work more efficiently.
