KENT'S top quiz teams battled for the county's top honour on Friday night when they competed for the KM Big Quiz Champions Trophy.

Winners and runners-up from the Maidstone, Medway, Canterbury and Ashford KM Big Quiz events staged in 2007 were invited to compete in the county final, staged at the Shepherd Neame brewery's function rooms in Faversham. The event's main sponsors were Ward and Partners estate agents.

Hosted by Kent Walking Bus charity chairman Simon Dolby the night raised £1,163 for the award-winning walk to school charity, of which £168 came from the bar and waitressing provided by Louise Hopkins and her team of staff from Shepherd Neame.

Yellow Slinky from Medway were crowned champions with 69 points, five points ahead of the Canterbury Gypsy Tarts. As well as their trophy the eight members of the winning team were each presented with a five day P&O Ferries Channel crossing voucher for a car and up to nine people. The Gypsy Tarts will be treated to a tour and beer tasting session at the Shepherd Neame brewery.

This year has been a bumper one for the KM Big Quiz with all four heats attracting record numbers of teams and increasing the amount raised for charities. The current record for the largest KM Big Quiz is held by Ashford with 84 teams of eight attending, while Canterbury holds the record for the most raised for good causes with £10,000 presented to four causes following the March 2007 event.

Two of the four KM Big Quiz dates have already been set for 2008 with Canterbury taking place on Friday, March 28 and Medway on Friday, June 6.

Event organisers are now starting the search for sponsors to support both charity events with seven organisations needed to sponsor quiz rounds at a cost of £150 and main sponsors needed at a cost of £500. Ken Owen from Yellow Slinky runs a number of challenging quiz nights around the county. Monday, Tudor Rose, Upnor; Tuesday, Huntsman, Rochester; Thursday, Who'd a thought it, Rochester. All are staged at 8.45pm. He also holds two music quiz sessions per month. In addition he organises a monthly general knowledge quiz at The Wateringbury in the village of Wateringbury on the last Wednesday of the month.
