One of the biggest firework displays in the area was hit by the weather on Saturday and is unlikely to have made any money.

The annual event at Mount Ephraim, Hernhill, has been going for nearly 25 years and a good night has returned a profit of more than £5,000.

But rain and high winds meant half the number of families attended and organisers say they will be happy to break even, meaning the intended beneficiary the Dawes Community Association children’s centre will probably lose out.

The evening was compered by kmfm breakfast show presented Bob Mower.

Organiser Nigel Kay said: “We are always at the mercy of the weather and I am just grateful as many people turned out as they did.

“Bob Mower from kmfm did a good job keeping the mood up and running competitions but we accept that outdoor events at this time of year are always going to be at risk of the weather.”
