Vicar's 'spectacular' way to raise cash for his church

Biddenden's Spectacular lived up to its name as visitors enjoyed a range of entertainments in the village on Saturday.

More than 80 people also took part in the Biddenden Challenge, a Kent Messenger Group-organised abseil down the 100ft tower of All Saints’ Church.

The lengthy descent - undertaken twice by the Rev Alex Bienfait - is thought to have raised in the region of £7,000-£8,000, to be distributed among the Kent Walking Bus project and the church’s restoration.

The spectacular also raised much needed cash, which will be shared among the village’s clubs, orgnisations and some charities such as Kent Air Ambulance and Riding for the Disabled.

Organiser Tony Churton said: “Everyone came away from the Spectacular having enjoyed themselves, with lots of people asking if we could do it again."
