Out of five groups of finalists the Canterbury school took first place with their rendition of the the classic motion picture track “I Wanna Be Like You” from Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book.

Staged by the KM Group’s charitable sector with the support of Independent Music Productions (IMP) and Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, the annual contest challenged schools involved with KM Walk to School schemes to create the best overall singing performance.

School choirs, classes and groups of friends were judged on vocal performance, choreography and originality – praising those who offered alternative lyrics and percussion to reflect walking to school.

The four choirs pipped to the post were West Lodge School, Sidcup; St Peter’s Catholic Primary School, Swale; St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, Medway; and Madginford Primary School, Maidstone.

Song Contest judge Simon Dolby praised all the groups for their fantastic efforts. “The children’s songs were just brilliant, and so many took the time to be creative and innovative with their versions of the iconic track. It was seriously tough selecting just a single champion, but Wincheap Primary claimed the crown after their stand-out performance,” he said.

St. Peter’s were a close second and claimed the runner up honour for the Best Original Lyrics at the awards event.

Wincheap’s choir will be invited to perform at leading KM Charity Team events the Green School Awards in February 2017 as well as Buster’s Big Bash in May 2017. The other finalists will also be invited to attend Buster’s Big Bash – the annual walk to school mini festival and record attempt to create Kent’s biggest walking bus.
