When legendary fundraiser Peggy Wood decided to hand over the reins of her charity in 2006, she knew just the man for the job.

Bryn Annis had been helping her out since the death of his father, Louie, some 10 years previously, and was on hand to take a more prominent role when Peggy chose to take a back seat.

Three years on, the decision has been justified – the Peggy Wood Foundation is going strong under Mr Annis’ leadership and continuing to raise money for vital cancer and leukaemia care equipment.

And his voluntary work for the trust, which he balances alongside a full-time role with support service MCCH, has now earned him a nomination for a Pride of Maidstone Award.

Sister-in-law Jo Annis, who nominated the charity chairman, described him as tireless and exceptionally generous.

She said: “They say if you need something done then go to a busy person; he’s one of those people.

“He has a lot on his plate but he will always help out.

“He deserves acknowledgement because he does so much.

“The charity raises a lot of money and it’s uniquely Maidstone based.”

Mr Annis recalled how he became involved with the charity.

“When my dad died we decided we wouldn’t buy flowers, but would give the money to charity; we decided we’d get involved.

“She slowly handed over and then said ‘if I don’t do it I’ll have to close’.”

The charity has raised a further £250,000 since Mr Annis took control, bringing the total raised since 1981 to £4m.

He added: “The reason the charity is so successful is that the money is raised by local people and used locally.

“I won’t be giving up, it’s a passion. I get a great deal of satisfaction and people’s generosity is fantastic.”
