ANYONE in Kent looking to start off their New Year's resolution to get fit on the right foot might consider signing up for a challenging charity walk this summer.

The first Pilgrims Way Walk, scheduled to take place in July, will raise money for the Children's Society. At more than 46 miles, with up to 16 miles being covered on any given day, it promises to be a real test of stamina.

Starting at Rochester, the route along the North Downs Way will take in some of Kent's most popular tourist attractions, including Leeds Castle, near Maidstone, Canterbury Cathedral and Godmersham Park near Ashford.

Participants will be following in the footsteps of the medieval pilgrims who travelled to the tomb of Thomas á Becket at Canterbury.

The Bishop of Rochester, The Rt Rev Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, has given his support to the walk. He said: "It is a great opportunity for people to come together to help some of the country's children who have not had the best start in life."

To take part in the Pilgrims' Way Walk, between Friday, June 27, and Tuesday, July 1, participants must pay a non-refundable registration fee of £75 and agree to raise a minimum of £500 in sponsorship. For more information, or to sign up, contact The Children's Society on 0845 300 1128.
