The Shouting Men: Gillingham midfielder Stuart O'Keefe looks ahead to a game against his former teams MK Dons and Ipswich Town over the festive period

I like the Christmas period because it’s games, games, games!

If you don’t get the right result you know you only have a few days to put it right and for me I always enjoy this time of year.

Games have a bit of an edge on them, especially with the FA Cup coming up for us, and Ipswich Town away on Boxing day.

It’s a good time to be playing and if we can pick up points in that period, there is no reason why we can’t be saying, ‘blimey, we are only one or two points off it you know’.

I don’t see why we can’t push for the play-offs. It’s still so early to judge because there are so many teams around us.

If we are going to do something this year we have to pick up as many points as we can in this period or we may be too far off it. We need to keep ourselves in the mix, in and around that top half if we can, then we give ourselves a chance.

We are just six points off it at the moment and there is so much congestion in there, with a lot of teams in the same boat.

We have just about played everyone now, we’ve beaten the leaders Wycombe, got a point at Fleetwood last weekend and recently beat Sunderland. We have also come close to Ipswich and Peterborough at home, so there is no reason we should fear anyone in the league.

It’s about finding that consistency, that way of playing and way of winning that can be the difference in this league. Win a few games and you can jump five or six places.

We’ve got MK Dons on Saturday and they showed last weekend that any team in this division is capable of beating another with a win over Oxford United.

For Milton Keynes to turn them over, one of the better teams in the league, it shows that if you are not on it, or at it, then you can get turned over by anyone.

I had three months there on loan under Robbie Neilson and enjoyed it. It’s a nice club, they play in a lovely stadium and it will be nice to see a few old faces, but it’s about us getting three points at home and getting closer to the play-offs.

With our turn of form and the results we’ve been getting, we are all looking forward to Saturday and keeping our momentum going.

For whatever reason it hasn’t worked out for Milton Keynes this season, so far. They just can’t find a structure that works for them but they have a natural goalscorer in Kieran Agard who I used to play alongside.

He has been around long enough to know what it is about and where the back of the net is. He is someone we need to keep an eye on and do a job on, to keep him quiet, hopefully.

We have a good record of doing that recently, especially at Priestfield. We have managed to keep out some good teams and good players and we will have to be at it again this Saturday.

It was good to get back involved again last weekend at Fleetwood. It was a tough away trip, but it felt good to be part of it.

The game was a bit scrappy but the weather obviously didn’t help.

We went up the night before and there was a cycle of sun, then rain, then hail, then a gale and it repeated that for about 24 hours.

It was a fight. The boys dug in and to come away with a point, especially being 1-0 down, shows a bit of character.

It was good to be back involved after missing a couple of games.

I tweaked my hamstring halfway through the first half at AFC Wimbledon; I knew in my mind it wasn’t going to get any better. I had to make a call and I came off after half an hour.

I have been in that situation before where I thought it might get better and it hasn’t, it has just ended up a lot worse and then you’re out for six weeks.

We got it right, treated it and we’re ready to go again during the busy Christmas period.

You know your own body better than anyone and I know through experience when to carry on and when to say no. Hopefully that is behind us now and we can look forward to Christmas.

I will be with my partner Christmas morning and probably go and see my family, who are based in Ipswich. They will be looking forward to the game on Boxing Day and will be going to watch.

I was with Ipswich as a kid between the ages of nine to 16 so for me it is a nice one to have.

We also have the game against West Ham in the FA Cup to look forward to and it’s looking like it’s going to be a sell-out.

Everyone wants to play against the bigger sides. It gives us a purpose to get in the team and stay in the team. It should be a fantastic day for Gillingham, a great atmosphere and something the fans deserve.
