Stimson keeping faith with strikers

Gills boss Mark Stimson believes Gary Mulligan, above, and Dennis Oli can score the goals to take the club up the table

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson will give his own strikers a chance to turn results round before heading back into the transfer market.

Stimson had already been keen to sign another forward, and with Mark McCammon likely to be suspended for three games after Saturday’s red card at Aldershot, Gills’ front line is even lighter.

But Stimson is confident his own players can fill the void.

Stimson said: "I know we’ve scored nowhere near enough goals, but to leave the boys out who we have got and bring some youngster in for a month could really disrupt things.

"Fingers crossed Gary Mulligan (ankle) and Dennis Oli (foot) will both be available next week. If they are, then there are two players there who could play down the middle with Simeon Jackson.

"I’m hoping Mulligan is fit for next week and if he is, with the work rate he’s got and with Jackson up-front, at this level they should cause problems."

Youngsters Luis Cumbers and Andy Pugh are also options.

Both scored in last week’s reserve outing against Crystal Palace, earning them a place on the bench at Aldershot.

"The two lads did brilliantly in the week," said Stimson.

"They were both phenomenal. Luis knows where the goal is and Pugh has been away with Folkestone and scored a few."
