Kent's Ross Smith makes his BDO World Darts Championship debut at the Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green, Surrey on Sunday.

The Lordswood player faces No.4 seed Scott Waites, a close friend and his pairs partner.

“I’m not too happy about facing Scott, but the friendship ends when we are on the oche,” he said.

Smith, who started playing darts in the Dover Invitation League, booked his place after coming through seven qualifying matches in Bridlington, Yorkshire.

The 19-year-old has already guaranteed himself £3,000 for making the finals, and with £95,000 on offer for this year’s champion, he has plenty of incentive to do well once the action begins.

“I’m not there to make the numbers up,” he said. “If you’re not confident there’s no point turning up.”

Smith's game is live on BBC television on Sunday at 1.50pm.
