Steve Evans wasn’t impressed by referee Charles Breakspear on Saturday.
The Gillingham manager was disappointed about his time-keeping and several other decisions he made in the 2-1 home defeat to Peterborough.
Evans described the Surrey official as “hopeless”.
With Gillingham pushing for a late equaliser, Evans was amazed to see only five minutes added on at the end of the game.
He said: “I am not going to say the referee is incompetent, that would get me in trouble, but I really have to question why, on the basis of six substitutions second half, which each took an eternity, especially for the visitors, then why five minutes?
“I will ask him. Charles is an honest guy. He will tell me what his thoughts were.”
Evans, earlier on in his post-match press conference, had said Mr Breakspear was “hopeless for Gillingham,” adding: “Darren Ferguson (the Peterborough manager) can have his own view on it from Posh and that’s not sour grapes.
“We lost to a wonder strike and a penalty and dominated the game in large parts. But at the same time we are always threatened by the counter.”
The Gills boss felt his side should have had a first half penalty, too, when Max Ehmer was pushed in the box
He said: “He has got wrong side of Rhys Bennett, he (the Posh defender) has got both hands around him, it was a penalty.”
Posh boss Darren Ferguson was left questioning the officials too, as he felt Gillingham’s goal was offside.
He said: “It was 15 yards offside and I can’t see why they haven’t seen it. Their goal shouldn’t have stood. Niall Mason didn’t kick it backwards, it came off their striker.”
Peterborough edged two goals ahead with a penalty after Mark Byrne handled in the box. Nobody was disputing that decision, least of all Evans.
He said: “Darren was probably amazed at the penalty, the same as I was. I don’t expect any of my players, under-9s, 10s, all the way up to first team, to do something as stupid as Mark did.”
