Gillingham face Plymouth Argyle and AFC Wimbledon in home fixtures as they target League 1 survival

It’s a massive few days ahead at Priestfield as Gillingham continue their battle against the drop.

Neil Harris has enjoyed two wins from two at the home of the Gills following his arrival as manager and they now have two more games in four days coming up at ME7.

Play-off hopefuls Plymouth are first up on Saturday before the Gills get the chance to reel in fellow strugglers Wimbledon under the lights.

With those back-to-back home wins - both 1-0 - Harris has every reason to feel confident.

He said: “We look forward to those two home games. It has been brilliant at Priestfield, I have enjoyed it, everyone I think has enjoyed it haven’t they in the stadium?

“We have all enjoyed it and that is what we are in the game for.

“Again, I am making no promises, not putting anyone under pressure, but we have started with two really strong performances (at home) and we want to follow that up with two more.”

Harris has managed to maintain some momentum since taking charge, improving the points-per-game ratio and making sure the defence is more sound. He’s just had his first full week with the team without a midweek fixture to get in the way as he looks to further improve the team.

The games ahead are big - but not quite pivotal. The Gills are five points from safety with 14 games remaining.

He said: “If I feel it is a must-win game I will say it. I didn’t feel that at all (with Saturday’s game). I thought it was important for us not to lose the game, to keep that momentum. We can talk about an individual game but I have to look at a slightly bigger picture and I look at the four games, we have seven points, that is a points tally that if we compare to the previous 15, seven is a great return.

“I can’t put huge expectation on the players at the moment because confidence is building.”

Harris still hopes to be able to see a bit more from his players. A week of rest and recovery will have helped after admitting they looked leggy last time out at Priestfield and several were suffering with fatigue at Morecambe at the weekend.

He said: “I want to see my team play better than that (on Saturday) and I have to put demands on the players as well, I can’t just sugar-coat it, we have to play better than that with the football, but they will, I know they will.”

Harris will hope to have Mustapha Carayol and Ben Reeves back available as they continue to recover from injury.
