Gillingham assistant manager David Kerslake hails Stuart Nelson's last-gasp save in 2-1 League 1 win over Coventry City

Stuart Nelson’s last-gasp save ensured Gillingham’s good work against Coventry wasn’t undone in the final seconds on Saturday.

Nelson was back in goal for injured loanee Jonathan Bond and his save at the death, to tip Marvin Sordell’s shot wide, was a crucial one.

Assistant boss David Kerslake praised the No.1 and acknowledged what a vital save it was.

He said: “One of the last things the manager said in the dressing room to the players (after the game) was that was a three-point save from Nelson.

“He has done it throughout his career and before at Gillingham and no doubt he will continue to do so. It was an outstanding save.”

Nelson lost his place in the team after a tricky start to the season. Bond was brought in on a half-season loan from Championship side Reading.

But a groin injury at Spurs last week, which looks set to keep him out for the next three weeks, has re-opened the door for fans’ favourite Nelson.

Kerslake said: “It is always a good problem for a manager to have. He has been outstanding while Bondy has been in the team. He has been his same enthusiastic, immaculate professional that he is, in and around the training ground and in the dressing room.

“He has come into the team and performed how we expected him to.

“He loves it here and he is a real Gill. He is an immaculate professional and he deserves every credit he gets.”
