Paul Piggott appointed manager of Ryman League Division 1 South Chatham Town

Chatham Town have appointed former Hollands & Blair boss Paul Piggott as their new manager.

Piggott enjoyed plenty of success at his former club and now Chatham are hoping he can be the man to turn around their fortunes.

Chats are currently in the Ryman League, Division 1 South relegation zone and called on Piggott following the dismissal of Darren Anslow, in the wake of last Saturday’s 7-0 defeat at home to Hastings.

Director of football Steve Binks is confident Piggott can help reignite the club.

“It’s a really positive move by the club,” said Binks. “We like him a lot and I am confident he will be a good appointment. He’s a former player, he knows the club and some of the committee. He’s very approachable and very pragmatic.

“He did a fantastic job at Hollands & Blair. I’m excited about him coming on board and hopefully Paul will bring some much needed stability to the playing side.”

Blair won the Kent Invicta League two years running under Piggott’s guidance and once promoted they were again challenging for honours, pushing Greenwich all the way, before finishing runners-up in last season’s Southern Counties East. They also won the League Cup last season.

Piggott – who played in goal for Chatham before suffering a broken leg – was in the dugout on Monday, assisting Binks, when they took on Faversham.

The match was abandoned after 27 minutes because of a waterlogged pitch with the score at 1-1.

Binks added: “Paul is well liked, well known and we have approached him before about the job but circumstances then weren’t right. The time is right now and we are confident he will get us out of trouble."

Piggott will have a bit of time to prepare for Chatham’s next game as they are not in action this weekend. His first match in charge will be away to Whyteleafe next Tuesday night.
