Chatham boss Paul Piggott aims for some rare FA Cup cheer

Chatham boss Paul Piggott would love to have some FA Cup tales to tell.

He admits they are in short supply but gets another season under way with a cup tie at home to Littlehampton on Saturday.

The FA Cup extra preliminary round match is one of four involving Medway’s Southern Counties East contingent.

Piggott admits to having a “terrible” history in the cup so far.

He said: “I haven’t got any good memories, as a player or manager. Clint Gooding (the Chatham assistant) has got them all. He’s got plenty of ammunition but not me.

"Clint can talk about reaching the third round with Gravesend & Northfleet (in the 1995/96 season) and going to Villa Park but I’ve got nothing. I still think it’s a great competition though, whatever level. It still has that same feel about it.”

Piggott has reshaped the squad over the summer, bringing in another three faces before the weekend.

Central defender Charlie McCarthy is a former Erith & Belvedere player, midfielder Chris Saunders is back at the club from Hythe while Alfie Foster is another familiar face, playing on loan from Margate last season.

“With those three coming in I am 99% happy with what we have got,” said Piggott.

“It’s been a busy summer. There has been a lot of rebuilding gone on but it’s still work in progress. Being busy is part of the job and it’s quite enjoyable."

Chats will be without Sam Prescott this weekend for the match against Sussex Premier Division side Littlehampton.

Fellow SCEFL side Rochester United host Erith Town, while Lordswood face a trip to league rivals Glebe. Hollands & Blair travel to Southern Combination League, Premier Division side Hassocks.
