Manager Steve Lovell has been reminding his Gillingham players of their defensive responsibilities

Gillingham were caught on the counter attack again last weekend and boss Steve Lovell has had enough.

He addressed his team on Monday to remind them of their responsibilities and talk through some of the mistakes that they’ve been making.

Lovell said: “We have to brush up on our counter attacking against teams because too many goals have been conceded against teams who break out against us.

“It is something we have been addressing and half the time it is our fault. Their second goal came from our free kick which is put into the box where we weren't set up properly. We didn't have players in right position to go and attack it and we didn't have enough defensive midfield players on the edge of the box.

“We go through these things in the week and then what happens is we get caught on the edge of the box with the ball and then they are at us.

“It is something we set up in training to try and stop and it is about people not taking responsibility to do what their task is. Somebody should have been on the edge of the box with Callum Reilly. It is up to the players to get that sorted.

“Luke (O’Neill) shouldn’t put the ball in until we set up properly, he can't just put it in willy-nilly, we had three minutes to go. If you are going to get a goal from a set play let's set it up, that is what set plays are, you need to set it up.

“We took that free kick and we weren't set up, not just to attack it but to defend it as well. It is something that has been a common occurrence this year that we have been caught on the counter attack and that is something we need to get better at.

"Luke is trying to put a ball in there to try and win the game, the boys are in there to try and get a goal but without thinking what if we do lose it and what if it does fall down to them on the edge of the box?

“There are things that can be sorted, we have a solution. The boys need to be more vocal with each other, there is enough experience in the team and there are no excuses. The boys have agreed with it and we have gone through it. Hopefully we will learn from it.”
