Gillingham manager Steve Lovell on Callum Reilly's latest injury setback

A tweaked thigh muscle ruled Callum Reilly out of last weekend’s match as his injury misery continues.

Prior to the Rochdale game he spoke to the Messenger about how he was glad to have put his various injury problems behind him, having started the previous three matches.

But he suffered another blow after picking up an injury in training the day before the match.

Boss Steve Lovell made Reilly a key summer acquisition but injuries have made life tough for the midfielder this season.

Lovell said: “He had just got back in the team and started doing well. He was excellent against Luton but it is disappointing for him.

“He has another season with us. He just has to finish this season and put it behind him.

“I know Callum will come good, he is an excellent player.

"It has been up and down for him but it is hard when you have injuries like that, three or four, it stops you and then you need to start again. It is a mental thing as well.

“He has come through them all and I was pleased for him to start playing well and he gets this now. It has happened to a few of our players, like Alex Lacey, Billy Bingham and Regan Charles-Cook, Dean Parrett and Josh Rees.

“These things happen but they will bounce back, they are young boys and they have still got a lot of years ahead of them. Hopefully next year it will be different for them.”

Bingham has been back training for a fortnight now and is expected to be back available for this weekend’s trip to Peterborough, although Lovell is unlikely to tinker with his line-up too much.

Defender Barry Fuller picked up a knock against Rochdale but Lovell said that he was fine. He has also trained this week.

“It has to be something pretty desperate to stop Barry from playing,” Lovell said.

Goalkeeper Tom Hadler was missing last weekend with a shoulder injury which he picked up while saving a penalty at Maidstone in the Kent Senior Cup.

Lovell said: “He fell on it apparently and the hard pitch jarred it so it was no point putting him on the bench Saturday. He should be alright.”

Louie Catherall will be on standby again should Hadler not be available.

Lovell will also hope to have winger Elliott List back after he was ruled out last weekend with a chest infection.
