George Williams is hoping a successful loan spell with the Gills will lead him to the Euros.
The Fulham forward appeared in four of Wales’ qualifiers for Euro 2016 before a knee injury ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.
Williams has six full caps, the latest appearance coming during an international friendly with Holland in November. The 20-year-old qualifies for Wales as his mother was born in the country.
He came off the bench in the qualifying matches against Andorra, Bosnia and Belgium and got his first – and so far only – start against Cyprus.
Wales finished second in Group B to qualify for the tournament in France. They will play Slovakia, Russia and England in the finals and getting there is now Williams’ aim.
He said: “If I want to get picked for the Euros, I need to perform for Gillingham and be playing. The Euros in the summer is something I want to be involved in. It would be win, win for everyone.
“Throughout my injury the Wales manager (Chris Coleman) kept in contact with me regularly to see how I was getting on.
“It was nice to be involved against Holland. I came on for 20 minutes and that was a bit of reassurance, after coming back from a long injury. He still picked me and put me on towards the end of the game.”
This summer’s finals will be the first major tournament Wales have been involved in for 57 years. Williams had to watch them finish the qualifying campaign from afar, as he recovered from a serious knee injury.
The Fulham youngster said: “That was a hard one to take, to be sitting at home watching and not being involved but I was delighted for everyone. We had worked so hard throughout the campaign and deserved to qualify."
