Gillingham forward Scott Kashket is a weekend doubt after injury forced him off at Grimsby.

Kashket, who has featured in every league and cup game so far this season, was replaced at the break by Jordan Green. He’ll be assessed ahead of the home game against Mansfield Town this Saturday but manager Neil Harris admits he has to be a doubt.

“I thought he has been getting better and better for me,” said the manager of his 26-year-old forward.

“I didn’t want to take him off but he has a groin issue, we will have see how he goes, but if it is then that will be a real shame because he is so lively, so sharp.

“We just thought that Jordan would be a like for like replacement to give us those legs on the pitch. We will have to see him and see how he goes for the weekend. Any player who comes off at half-time in a midweek game is going to be very doubtful for the Saturday.”

Harris did have Robbie McKenzie involved for the first time since his deadline day signing. The right-back played the full game against Grimsby, benefiting from the club’s free weekend.

The postponement of the Crawley Town game on Saturday, following the Queen’s death, meant the Gills had the chance for an in-house game, giving McKenzie an opportunity to play for an hour and get him up to speed.

Harris said: “Off the back of Swindon (the previous Saturday) where we built huge momentum, we were probably right up there with the most disappointed clubs, not to play at Crawley, it was a game we were desperately looking forward to and desperate to go and win.

“I 100% supported the decision not to play the game, but we were absolutely gutted that game was off. What Saturday allowed, by us not going to Crawley, was Robbie McKenzie to play 60 minutes in an in-house game which he needed. It was a tight call between my options in that full-back area but I just thought Robbie was my gut feeling and he did very well.”

Olly Lee (tendinitis) and Dom Jefferies (hamstring) were still missing for the midweek trip to Grimsby.
