Australian midfielder Ryan Edwards is hoping to have caught Gills manager Justin Edinburgh’s eye on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was released by Reading at the end of last season and played 90 minutes for Gillingham in a 2-1 win over Tonbridge Angels.

Edwards made seven appearances while at Reading and Edinburgh must now decide whether to give the Sydney-born youngster another chance.

“There will be discussions between myself and the player and we will see where we go,” said Edinburgh.

“He is someone who has played a few games in the Championship for Reading and was recommended to us.

“We felt it was a good opportunity for us to have a look at him in a whole game because Doug Loft had a bit of a sore calf. It made sense.”

Edinburgh is still hoping to bring in a new keeper by the start of the season, while defensive additions are also on his wishlist.
