Gillingham v Arsenal under-21s: Zech Medley and Trae Coyle set to face Gunners at Priestfield

Trae Coyle and Zech Medley will be available to play against their own team tonight when Arsenal come to town.

The Arsenal under-21s take on Gillingham at Priestfield in the final group game of the EFL Trophy. Both teams are able to qualify for the next round, with the Gunners in pole position after two wins from two.

Arsenal loan pair Coyle, 19, and 20-year-old defender Medley, were both named on the bench for the Gills in their weekend FA Cup game and could now get a run-out against their mates. Coyle had a positive impact when coming on in the second half against Woking.

Evans has confirmed both are available and said: “We will work on a team and a system to take on a very talented Arsenal team who have already beaten Ipswich in this competition.

“We will make a number of changes to the starting team but we hope it is strong enough to compete with what we believe will be a stronger than normal Arsenal U23 team.”

Both Medley and Coyle played for Arsenal in the Trophy last season, giving them a rare glimpse at the time into men’s senior football. They have both been involved in Gills' League 1 campaign this season after joining on season-long loan deals.

For Gills’ management team, the EFL Trophy - now sponsored by Papa John's pizzas - is a competition that gives them a good chance of seeing some of the country’s emerging talent.

Speaking on Saturday, assistant boss Paul Raynor said: “It gives us chance to look at players from the opposition, we take in quite a few of those games when we can, it is good to see what is out there and it is good for us to pit our wits against good young players.

“We will give some game time to some of the guys to top them up as well, because we haven’t got a massive squad and we need to make sure everyone is good to go whenever is required.”

The Gills beat Crawley in their opening Trophy match but lost 2-0 to Ipswich in the second match, leaving them on three points. Ipswich take on Crawley tonight as the other group match. The top two teams progress.

Gillingham’s loan midfielder Scott Robertson was missing on Saturday, suffering with a hamstring injury. He could be involved against Arsenal but no chances will be taken with the young Celtic player.

“He tweaked his hamstring a little bit,” Raynor confirmed.

“He has played a lot of football. He had a little bit of fatigue in his hamstring so we erred on the side of caution with Scott. He might be right Tuesday but we have a couple of weeks to get him ready if he isn’t (for the next league game, against Charlton a week Saturday).

The Gills are without a game this weekend as opponents Lincoln City have three players selected for international duty.
