Gillingham have to put things right at Plymouth says captain Kyle Dempsey

Gillingham captain Kyle Dempsey wasn’t hiding from their failings at Northampton on Tuesday night.

He can only hope the team can bounce back with a decent performance against Plymouth this coming Saturday.

“As a group we are massively disappointed,” he said, following the 3-1 loss.

“We came away from Rochdale after such a good performance (winning 4-1 last time out) and then go out and deliver that, it is not good enough at all.

“It wasn't a lack of effort, I think we gave it our all, in the end it was the quality and we didn't bring any of it. We got punished. We conceded three sloppy goals and if you do that you give yourself a mountain to climb.”

Dempsey said there was a lack of quality but his free-kick to pull it back to 2-1 just before the break wasn’t bad. He beat the wall and the goalkeeper to give the Gills hope.

Unfortunately they then conceded again shortly after the restart.

“(The third goal) was an absolute killer,” he said.

“We had gone in at half time knowing we were poor first half but to get that goal at 2-1 we thought, ‘let’s have a real good second half, get ourselves back in it and try and win the game’ but we went back out and conceded after a minute. We did the same against Doncaster, we got back into the game but they scored a minute after. It was a massive blow.

“We now have to show real character and bounce back, put it behind us and forget about it and put full focus into the new year,.

“We have got to put things right against Plymouth and hopefully come away with a win.”
