Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh will face former team Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup

Justin Edinburgh will face his former team after the Gills were handed an away game at Tottenham in round three of the EFL Cup.

The Gills boss won the League Cup as a player with Tottenham in 1999, as his former team beat Leicester City 1-0 in the final. Edinburgh was sent off in that match.

Gills manager Edinburgh played over 200 games for Spurs and is sure to relish a return to White Hart Lane.

Gillingham booked their place in round three of the competition with an extra-time victory over Premier League Watford on Tuesday night.

Justin Edinburgh’s men came from a goal down to win the game, with Mark Byrne levelling the scores and Bradley Dack hitting the winner.

Boss Justin Edinburgh hailed the win as his best yet since taking over at Priestfield.

The Gills knocked Southend United out in the opening round.

Round three games take place on week commencing September 19. Dates will be confirmed once TV games are picked. Tottenham host Sunderland on the Sunday which means their game against the Gills is likely to take place on the Wednesday night.

The two sides have only met once before, also in the League Cup. Tottenham won the game 4-2 at Priestfield in January 1983.

Gillingham were last in the League Cup third round during the 2005/06 season but after knocking Premiership side Portsmouth out in round two they lost to Doncaster in round three.
