Dynamos wrap up another title

Invicta Dynamos secured the English National League South 1 title in style on Sunday evening, defeating Milton Keynes Thunder 6-0 in an ill-tempered game at Planet Ice.

A five-goal blitz in the first period all-but secured the team's sixth consecutive league championship, but the ramifications of match penalties handed to imports Martin Melichercik and Milan Kostolny could yet sour what was otherwise a perfectly executed victory.

The two Slovakians were thrown out either side of the first break, but not before they’d played important roles in deciding the game.

Melichercik grabbed an assist on the fourth goal, before being sent to the locker room for his part in a fight.

Kostolny, the division’s leading points scorer, had time to grab a goal and two assists, but failed to keep his cool as he joined his fellow countryman on an incitement charge.

Man-of-the-match Andy Smith added four points (2+2), taking his total to 45 in 17 games since his return in December.

Elliot Andrews (2) and Karl Lennon wrapped up the scoring, but it’s the concern over possible suspensions to Melichercik and Kostolny that will taint any victory celebrations.

Coach Kevin Parrish said: "This title is a massive deal for us this year.

"We knew it was going to be difficult, and we’ve been pushed all the way by Bracknell, but since Christmas our forms been excellent. We went to Milton Keynes and got the job done, which is all you can ask."
