Mark Stimson is banking on an FA Cup run to fund his transfer plans.

The Gillingham boss last week missed out on the signing of Leeds striker Bradley Johnson and is desperate for a cash injection to give him some financial clout.

Gills start their FA Cup campaign with a difficult trip to Bury this weekend, but they will be buoyed by Saturday’s gritty 1-0 win at Macclesfield in League 2.

Stimson is now hoping for another away victory so he can add fresh blood to his promotion-chasing squad.

"There are one or two I would like to bring in," he said.

"I offered money for Bradley Johnson (when I was) at my old club and I offered money for him when I first came here - it was the first signing I wanted to make.

"We couldn’t do a deal with Leeds because of the finance side of it and now he has gone to Brighton and scored two goals on his league debut.

"A run in the FA Cup would help because you get a nice bit of prize money for getting into the next round."
