Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh believes they good enough to win more away games in League 1

Gillingham boast the Football League’s best home record but manager Justin Edinburgh knows away form will be crucial.

The Gills face three away games in their next four fixtures, starting with a trip to relegation-threatened Oldham on Saturday.

But having picked up just five away wins all season, victories on the road are now a must if the Gills want to gain automatic promotion.

Edinburgh’s side sit second in League 1 but have taken just one point from their last three away games.

He said: “We have had some good performances away from home without capitalising and gaining maximum points. That will be a disappointment for the group.

“We are more than capable of going away and getting good results. We have had the performances without the points that they merited. If we continue to play like we are, then we are going to be all right.

"There are going to have to be some away wins if we are going to get to where we want to be. It has surprised me that we haven’t had more away victories.

“We had some excellent wins early on in the season but I look at Colchester where we got beat and I can’t fathom how we did. We should have been out of sight.

“With 15 games to go, we have to look to start winning some of these away games. You have to always look to improve and better yourself."
