Alfie Jones was a big plus for the Gills on Tuesday night but manager Steve Evans knows he can deliver more.

The 21-year-old Southampton loanee played in central defence when he first joined the club but has recently been moved into midfield.

It’s a position Evans favours for the Premier League youngster.

He said: “I signed Alfie to play there, it’s no secret, I know it, Southampton know it and he knows it. He is a good player.

“I have watched him for a little while and there is more to come from him, when we get one or two people fit around about him. He complements what we are all about.”

Evans believes he has a real talent on his hands, adding: “He is big, he is strong, he is physical, he’s an athlete and a good kid.

“Credit to Southampton and his parents, who I don’t know, but he is first in, last out, he does it all properly. He lives properly, he eats properly, his diet is proper, his weight is proper, his body fat is proper.

“Alfie has set a standard but I have seen him play better in that role for Southampton so he needs to improve and get to the levels I have seen him at.”
