Firefighters saved a pet dog from a ravine in Rochester after the animal ran off to chase a fox.

Labrador cross Wellington was out with his owner Karen Robinson when he disappeared into the 25m ravine at Fort Borstal.

A Kent Fire and Rescue rope rescue team from Deal attended and found Wellington unhurt.

They were planning to abseil down but managed to find a different entrance where they could slide down and lift the dog to safety.

Karen, of Sir Evelyn Road, Rochester, said: "He just darted through a fence after a fox and I couldn't call him back and he wasn't responding to me.

"I couldn't hear him moving around and I was worried that he was at the bottom of this moat dead, or at best injured, He is very precious to me so I was really worried."

She praised the swift response of emergency services after she got in touch with the police who alerted firefighters.
