Veterans and cadets will cobine forces for this year's armed forces day

Veterans and cadets will combine forces to mark this year’s Armed Forces Day.

After leading last year’s celebrations of the inaugural day in 2009, which was attended by then Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chief of Defence Staff Sir Jock Stirrup, the Historic Dockyard is planning a more low-key activity this year.

Chatham Armed Forces Day will take place on Sunday, June 27, the day after the main event which this year is in Cardiff.

This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the Armed Forces Cadet movement, and this will also be marked at Chatham’s celebrations.

The day will begin with a commemorative church service at 11am before a parade through the dockyard led by the City of Rochester Pipe Band and including veterans and cadets.

An inter-service cadet gun run competition will take place and there will also be displays by different groups.

The day will end with a display by the pipe band and a flag lowering ceremony.

Armed forces veterans, serving members of the forces and cadets and former employees of Chatham Dockyard will have free entry, and will also be able to buy five guest tickets for £8.50 each.

All veteran passes and guest tickets must be applied for on an official application form available on www.thedockyard.co.uk.

Places for the church service are on a first-come first-served basis and can also be applied for on the website.

Normal admission prices apply to all other people wanting to attend the celebration, and those with 12-month passes will be able to get free entrance to the venue as usual.
