Emergency services and National Highways were sent to the scene at around 4pm.

Two fire engines attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using hose reel jets.

There were estimated delays of 25 minutes on approach to the incident, with traffic also slowing on the Londonbound carriageway.

KCC Highways told drivers to approach with caution.

At around 5.30pm the lane was reported to have reopened.

A spokesman from the fire service said: “The cause is thought to have been an engine fault.

“Duty of care was left with the Highways agency.”
