A man dubbed one of America’s ‘most wanted’, who was arrested in Medway, has been remanded in custody until July.

Sean Lopes, 47, appeared in court in London yesterday after being on the run for almost nine years.

He was convicted in the USA for the attempted murder and kidnap of a 22-year-old woman in New York in 2004.

Lopes, pictured, had been living and working in Britain after absconding, but had been sentenced to 15 years in his absence for the crimes.

He was living in Victoria Road, Chatham, when he was arrested by police in New Road in the town, after a tip-off.

Officers finally caught up with Lopes on Monday, May 6, after Kent Police worked with the Metropolitan Police and the authorities in New York to track him down. He had been working at Sainsbury’s in Gravesend.

He appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court yesterday and the case against him was adjourned.

He was remanded in custody until his next appearance at the same court on Thursday, July 4.

In 2006, Lopes was labelled by the New York Police Department as in the top 10 of the city’s most wanted fugitives. Last year the US authorities said they believed Lopes was hiding in Trinidad and Tobago.

He had became obsessed with his ex-girlfriend, Amanda Hopkins, when she dumped him.

At the time, prosecutors claimed Lopes sneaked into her apartment in June 2004 and when she came home, threatened to kill her and then commit suicide.

Police stormed the flat and found Lopes holding a butcher’s knife to Ms Hopkins’ throat. He went missing while he was on bail for the crimes.
