An accident was narrowly avoided when a minibus tyre came loose after thieves stole the wheel trim.

Detectives said passengers could have suffered "significant injuries" after the theft from the VW vehicle in College Avenue, Gillingham.

The damage led to the tyre coming loose while the minibus was being driven.
The theft of the chrome wheel trim is believed to have happened near the Stafford Street junction between noon and 4.30pm last Wednesday.

DS Chris Watson said: "This was an extremely serious incident which could have resulted in significant injuries for those travelling on the bus.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident take place, or who has information about the theft, to contact police as a priority on 01634 792685.

"Also, I would be keen to hear from residents of College Avenue who have private CCTV footage which may assist with the investigation."

Anyone who has information but wishes to remain anonymous is asked to phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
