A289 Medway Tunnel closed after serious crash

A motorcyclist has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being thrown from his bike.

The A289 Medway Tunnel Westbound was closed from 2.35pm today.

All lanes are now open but there is still heavy traffic in area.

Police and an air ambulance was dispatched to the scene.

An eyewitness who drove past the accident said fire crews appeared to be working down an embankment next to the road.

A spokeswoman from the fire service said: "One fire engine and a technical rescue team attended.

"The motorcyclist who had been thrown from his bike, was rescued and handed into the care of SECAmb paramedics and the air ambulance."

The rider was assessed and treated before being airlifted to hospital in London with serious injuries.
