A toddler was rescued by firefighters after she was accidentally locked in a car at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre, in Gillingham.

Firefighters from Medway fire station were called out to the car park at the shopping centre at about 1.10pm on Monday after the little girl was accidentally locked in a BMW.

It is understood she was with her grandmother and mother when the incident happened as they packed their shopping into the boot of their vehicle.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The little girl, who was probably about two, had been put in the car in her child seat while the grandmother and mum put their shopping in the boot.

"As they closed the boot they realised the little girl had the keys and had managed to lock herself inside."

The crew then put sticky tape across a window furthest away from the child and smashed it so they could free her.

The spokesman added: "The tape sticks to the broken glass so it does not shatter inwards when we smash it.

"The little girl was fine, she got a bit upset when one of our crew members climbed into the car to open the doors, but was fine a soon as she was reunited with her grand and her mum.

"They were very grateful for our assistance."
