Breakdown causes traffic chaos on Wainscott Bypass after M2 crash

Drivers faced mega delays of two hours coming into the Medway Towns after several incidents caused huge tailbacks.

Police were called to the scene and one lane was closed on the A289, leading to long delays from the M2 along the Wainscott Bypass towards Strood and the Medway City Estate.

There were further traffic problems caused by roadworks on Anthonys Way – where a lane has been closed to traffic approaching the roundabout where works are taking place on a new slip road leaving the Medway City Estate.

It is not yet known why the lane had been shut and further details have been requested from Medway Council.

A two-car crash in the Gillingham bound carriageway of the Medway Tunnel at 11.10am has also been adding to delays.

Drivers said it took them two hours to negotiate the traffic entering Medway with routes jammed up towards the Four Elms roundabout, the Wainscott roundabout and along Anthonys Way towards the tunnel.

The incident followed a crash earlier this morning on the nearby M2, in which a car overturned between Junction 3 for Maidstone and Junction 4 for Gillingham on the coastbound carriageway, which also brought traffic to a standstill.

Police say no injuries were reported.
