The constables were then approached by a member of the public who described somebody acting suspiciously in the area.

They entered an alleyway where a man made off in the opposite direction and officers chased him.

After a short pursuit the suspect was detained in Hartington Street and wraps of suspected class A drugs were seized along with three mobile phones.

A search of the route he had taken led to the recovery of further suspected drugs and another phone.

The 54-year-old man from Walworth, Greater London, was taken into custody and an investigation is underway.
