Meet Victoria, just three weeks old and already making the headlines.
The tiny and, as you can see, happily snoozing tot made a bit of local history at 3.42pm on Tuesday, April 14 – the exact time of her dramatic entrance into the world.
Victoria, third child of Melissa and Andy Back, is the first to be born at Medway’s 14-strong network of Sure Start centres.
She was delivered by midwife Heather Scott after Melissa went into labour in the car park of the Kingfisher Children’s Centre.
Melissa, Andy, son Oliver, four, and daughter Abigail, two, had just arrived at the centre in Kingfisher Drive, Chatham, for a 3pm check-up.
Heather said: “Andy came flying in, saying Melissa was sitting in the car park and her waters had gone. We rushed out and brought her in. I examined her and found she was almost there so we called for an ambulance.
“We’d just got Melissa on the trolley when she decided she wanted to push.”
Both Melissa and Victoria were later taken to Medway Maritime Hospital where they remained overnight before returning to the family home in Hartlip.
Andy said: “Melissa and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their help, especially Heather.
“Everyone was so well organised. We knew Victoria would be a quick delivery, Oliver was born in hospital but Abigail was born at home in 10 minutes so we knew once it started she would deliver quickly.”
Cllr Les Wicks, responsible for Medway Council’s children’s services, said: “Our children’s centres are places where mums, dads, childminders and carers can go for support and this mum has support right from day one – giving this little girl a sure start in life.”
