Fifty students were evacuated from their digs after a cooker blaze broke out in one of the kitchens.

Firefighters were called to the flats, on the University of Greenwich campus at Chatham Maritime, just after 11pm on Tuesday.

The blaze had broken out in a kitchen on the third floor.

All 30 flats had to be evacuated while two crews from Medway fire station tackled the flames, leaving around 50 students standing outside.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "Although the fire was on the third floor, we had quite easy access and we were able to run a hose from the pump on the ground and go in wearing breathing apparatus. We were on the scene for about an hour.

"There was damage to the cooker and some smoke damage to the rest of the room."
