Schoolboy Zac Newman picked up his spade to help neighbours on his street.

When snow turned to dangerous ice in Weston Road, Strood, 11-year-old Zac decided he would clear the pathway.

He said: “I went to the dentist and quite a few people were slipping over.

“Down my road there are quite a few old people so I thought I would do something about the ice.”

Zac, a pupil at St John Fisher School in Chatham, spent about three hours scraping ice from the pavements on Monday.

He added: “People have been going by and saying thank you for clearing the path.”

His mum, Angela Newman, said: “He is quite helpful and will often help around the house, making the tea, hoovering and cooking.

“I am proud of him and it is nice that the neighbours have noticed what he has done.”
