Confusion is mounting over the likely impact of next week's school strikes in Medway.

Head teachers are trying to find out which of their staff will be working and which will be absent on Thursday, but many teachers are reluctant to confirm their plans.

Union officials - who have an overwhelming mandate for the strike - are trying to discover details.

Medway Council expects to have a clearer idea of which schools will be affected by Tuesday.

Schools have been advised they can change the school hours, use senior managers and support staff as teachers and have over-sized classes to keep their doors open.

Several schools have already confirmed they will be closed. They include two secondary schools - Thomas Aveling and, except for its youngest Year 7 pupils, Fort Pitt Grammar School. Other schools will close some classes for the day.

Plans are being drawn up for a big strike rally on the waterfront next to Medway Council's headquarters. It will be preceeded by a march from Chatham High Street.
