HUNDREDS of jobs could be under threat at Medway Council as councillors tackle multi-million pound overspending.

Rumours of a 10 per cent cut in staff have gathered momentum at the Civic Centre.

But Cllr Alan Jarrett (Con), finance portfolio holder, said: "I cannot put a figure on it at all. We are determined to fix this problem."

Meanwhile, trade unions officials are concerned that the council is not talking with them about the staff implications.

As well as a £6.4million overspend this year, the council is forecasting a £9million cost increase next year it cannot fund.
